Chikungunya - India could at risk from the mosquito-borne disease
A team of scientists from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, Nagasaki University, and the International Vaccine Institute (IVI) in Seoul carried out a study that charted potential global hotspots for chikungunya transmission, aiming to help countries strengthen their preparedness efforts.
The warning about rising cases of Chikungunya, a mosquito-borne viral disease spreading through Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. The infection causes sudden high fever, severe joint pain, headache, fatigue, and skin rash. While most patients recover within days, joint pain can linger for weeks or even months.
There is currently no specific antiviral treatment for Chikungunya. Doctors recommend rest, hydration, and pain relief with paracetamol, avoiding aspirin until dengue is ruled out.
Public health officials are urging communities to eliminate mosquito breeding sites and protect themselves with repellents, nets, and long clothing. Although deaths are rare, experts caution that prevention remains the best defense against this rapidly spreading disease
